Troubleshooting for Flushometers that Continuously Flushes

13 December 2018

Flushometers have become an essential piece of equipment in the effort to conserve water, as these are being used extensively to flush commercial toilets and urinals in restaurants, shopping malls, office buildings, gyms, and public restrooms everywhere. Flushometers are very popular because they save commercial properties a lot of money by lowering water usage considerably.

However, although they are used in high-efficiency toilets and urinals, like all things, they will eventually malfunction or cease to work properly. When that happens, it is common that flushometers will continuously begin to flush – water will flow unhindered into the toilet or urinal.

If you notice that one of your toilets or urinals are continuously flushing, and you can’t get it to stop, then there are some things you can try to fix the problem.

How to Troubleshoot a Flushometers that Continuously Flushes

If you have a flushometer on a toilet or urinal that continuously flushes, it can end up costing you a considerable amount of money because of increased water usage if you don’t fix it right away. On the side of the flushometer there should be a flat face with a slot for a screwdriver, this will be either on the right or left side. Using a standard screwdriver, turn the flat metal face that has the screwdriver slot to shut off water the water flow.

Once you have turned off the flow of water to the flushometer, you will note that there is flange cover on top of the flushometer, you will need to remove it to inspect the gasket underneath. Once removed, if there is much sediment on the gasket, that may be the cause of the problem. You can attempt to take out the gasket and try to clean it, or, if the gasket appears damaged then you should replace it with a new one.

If this doesn’t fix the problem, then you should contact a professional plumber. Attempting to fix a flushometer that continuously flushes is not everyone’s cup of tea. To avoid this type of problem, it is advised to contact a professional plumber to regularly service the flushometers in public restrooms, and to replace gaskets when needed, before they fail to function.
