The Dangers of Hot Shower Burn and Why Thermostatic Shower Mixer is Now a Necessity

14 January 2020

Anyone that has been scalded knows how painful it can be. When water is hot, it doesn’t take long for flesh to burn and children’s skin burns more quickly. Also, at higher risk are older people who react more slowly, and are more susceptible to burns as a result. Below are the dangers of hot shower burn and why thermostatic shower mixer is now a necessity.

Hot Tap Water Quickly Causes Burns

A hot water tap delivering 140°F water can cause a burn quickly. Single lever faucets mix hot and cold water, but can still deliver straight hot water. There’s an additional problem with single-lever shower valves. If a person sets the mix of hot and cold water to produce a comfortable temperature, they may get a blast of pure hot water if the cold water pressure drops suddenly.

Damaged Skin Cells

Extra hot showers can force your skin into a state of stress. The outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, is your body’s largest organ—and too-hot water can really damage your skin cells and tissues, which can cause broken capillaries and rashes. Hot water can actually cause tiny “tears” in the skin that can lead to cell damage, breakouts and infections. These occur when the extreme heat from the water causes the skin to burn and blister.

Acne and Dry Skin

Hot water in your shower isn’t as purifying and bacteria-killing as you might think. A too-hot shower can actually make acne worse and cause it to spread. Also, hot water washes away skin’s protective oils, your skin will be dry, tight, and itchy after taking a shower with a too-high temperature.

Thermostatic Valves Saves the Day

Thermostatic valves have two controls: one for the volume of water and one for temperature. These are safer because the manufacturer or installer can set the limit within the valve itself to prevent an unsafe setting. They are also more convenient because the temperature can be left in your favourite position and all you have to do is turn the water on the next time you jump in the shower.
