Signs that Indicate that Your Flusher Valve Needs to be Replaced

14 September 2018

There are many problems that can occur in a home’s plumbing system. One of the most common areas of a home where plumbing problem do occur is the bathroom. While many problems with bathroom plumbing can be repaired using DIY techniques, most people are not knowledgeable or equipped enough to identify the problem and then fix it themselves.

For example, identifying the signs that indicate that a flusher valve needs to be repaired or replaced. The flusher valve or filler valve is a common bathroom problem. It is basically a tube that has a shutoff valve attached to it. It is connected to the water supply that is located at the bottom of the toilet tank.

The Function of a Toilet Flusher Valve

A toilet flusher valve is important to the functioning of a toilet because it allows water to enter the tank, refilling it after each flush or use. There is an air-filled floater that connects directly to the flusher valve that will shut off the valve when water reaches a certain height inside the tank.

While it is an effective and basic design, over time, it is common that problems will develop with use. Here are some of the signs that indicate that your flusher valve needs to be replaced:

The toilet constantly runs – many times when the toilet’s water constantly runs the problem is often caused by a leaking flapper, but that is not always the case. The real problem can be a worn-out flusher valve, or a combination of the two. The best solution to this problem is to simply replace the flusher valve.

The toilet makes a strange humming sound – as water fills the tank, you may hear a strange sound, it could be originating from a worn flusher valve that no longer opens or closes correctly. Often described as a “humming” sound from water flowing through a worn aperture, the noise indicates that water isn’t flowing freely into the tank as it should.

While these are just a couple examples of signs that indicate that your flusher valve needs to be replaced, there are others, such as the tank is over flowing with water, or leaks coming from the flusher valve. To avoid these problems, it is advised to call a reliable plumber to inspect your toilet and your home’s plumbing. Preventive maintenance is always the best way to avoid expensive repairs down the road.
