04 June 2019Because plumbing is a major part of peoples’ lives, over the past few decades many plumbing myths have spread, which have left people wondering if there is any truth to them? In an effort to clear-up any confusion, the information below will help in debunking major plumbing myths.
The Biggest Plumbing Myths Debunked
Here at G. Brand & Sons Plumbers, we have been faithfully serving Melbourne’s plumbing needs for over 90 years, and our plumbers have heard nearly every plumbing myth floating around out there today. In a sincere effort to inform the public about how plumbing ‘really’ works, we will debunk some of the major plumbing myths going around.
The biggest plumbing myths:
If there is no problem, you don’t need to call a plumber – while water is still available in the pipes, and there are no clogs or backflow of the drains, most people believe that a plumber is only needed when problems arise. Actually, that is not true. Regularly scheduled plumbing maintenance and checks can make sure that no costly, unexpected plumbing problems occur.
Over time, plumbing systems that are not checked or maintained by a plumber will eventually develop problems, potentially causing sudden costly repair that can result in water damage that can run into the thousands of dollars. To prevent unexpected and costly plumbing repairs, it is advised to contact a licensed plumber to check your residential or commercial building at least once every 2 years.
Toilets can handle anything – this is one of the most common misunderstood plumbing myths that needs to be debunked. Toilets are designed for a specific purpose, and are not meant to handle anything else but human waste and toilet paper. Flushing and disposing of common items such as baby wipes, food, sanitary napkins, cat litter, cigarettes, or any garbage will surely result in the toilet clogging and overflowing.
Plumbing products sold at hardware stores are better than a plumber for unclogging pipes and drains – there are plumbing products that are sold at grocery stores and hardware stores that may unclog toilets and drains, but these wreak havoc on your pipes. While such products may sound like a good idea for a quick fix, these contain harmful chemicals that cannot only damage your plumbing system, but will also harm the environment.
All plumbers are the same – this is definitely not true! Not all plumbers have the same training, experience or skill set, that is why it is important to contact a licensed and insured plumber for inspecting your plumbing system, or in case of an emergency.
