The Flushometer Technology and How It Really Works

20 July 2016

Know it or not, flushometer technology is everywhere, and though you may not be familiar with the name, a flushometer is a plumbing device you’ve surely seen and used, at some point. Flushometers in the past were mostly used in commercial buildings and in public restrooms, however, many residential property owners and managers are utilising flushometer installation services more than ever before.

If you are left wondering, what is a flushometer, and how does this technology really work? Then, you are not alone, the information provided here should satisfy anyone’s curiosity.

Flushometer Technology and How it Works

It is a common plumbing device that controls water flow, and it is used extensively for regulating the water flow in toilets. Unlike most residential toilets that depend on a tank of water that relies on gravity to flush the toilet bowl, restroom toilets that employ flushometers are tank-less. Instead, this technology uses water pressure from a building’s plumbing to effectively flush water down toilet bowls and urinals.

Flushometer Function Explained

When activating the flushometer, it immediately releases a determined set amount of pressurized water that washes out urinals and flushes toilet content down the drain. While these are single flush use, the activation mechanism can be pressed to allow a continual stream of pressurised water to flow, when needed. It is preferred in restrooms with much traffic, such as in malls, restaurants, pubs and public places because no waiting is necessary to refill any water tank.

Types of Flushometers

Basically, there are two types – diaphragm and piston valves. Both systems have similar, multiple chambers where water is pressurised – a small, low pressure chamber, and then a larger pressurised chamber. The piston valve and diaphragm valves are stationed between these to chambers, and when the trigger mechanism is activated, and the valves open, pressurised water is expelled.

Activation/Trigger Mechanisms

As you have probably noticed when venturing into any public restroom, such as at the airport, mall or pub, the activation mechanism of toilets and urinals is either a lever or a button, with high-end models sporting a motion-sensor activation mechanism. By regulating water in this way, flushometers reduce water usage, and that is a good thing.
