Indicators that Show Sewage Blockage in Houses

18 July 2019

Dealing with sewage blockage in houses is a messy business, as it could potentially require digging into the ground to reach the sewer line to rectify the problem. A properly functioning sewer line allows solid and liquid waste to flow from a house to the municipal sewer system, and it is the responsibility of property owners to maintain the proper functioning of their respective sewer lines.

Failure to respond quickly to issues with a sewer line, such as sewage blockage, can result in numerous other problems, which is why property owners should be on the lookout for indicators that show sewage blockage in houses.

Indicators of a Blocked Sewage Line in Houses

If you are not sure there is a sewage blockage in your house, then there are a few indicators that you should lookout for that may confirm your suspicions.

Backed up drains – if there is a blocked sewage line in your home it will eventually cause other drains in the house to backup, such as sink drains, bathtub and shower drains, and toilets. If any of these drains backup with water that has a foul smell, then that is a definite indicator you may have a clogged sewer line.

When a house’s main sewer line is blocked or clogged, water will begin to back up the line and start to overflow into other connected plumbing fixtures and drains.

Patches of lush grass growth – it is not uncommon that sewage blockage is caused by roots of trees growing into sewer lines. In your yard, patches of lush grass will grow above clogged and broken sewer lines and will be accompanied by a presence of bad odour. These are indicators that will let you know you have sewage blockage and a broken sewer line.

Cracked driveway – if your sewer line runs under your driveway, escaping water from a cracked and clogged line can cause soggy soil which can eventually result in cracks showing up on your driveway.

A slow draining toilet – in the case of sewage blockage and a broken sewer line, the water level in your toilet will slowly drop over the course of hours. This will happen when water is allowed to escape from a crack or break in your sewer line, most likely caused by tree roots growing into old sewer pipes.

If you notice any of the above indicators that show sewage blockage, it is recommended to call a professional plumber as soon as possible to inspect your home’s sewer line. Plumbers can use a CCTV camera and cable snake machine to locate and remove any obstruction in your home’s sewage line.
